What matters today
Mining
Congo's justice minister has ordered judicial investigations into mining fraud, illegal mining and mineral smuggling in Lualaba and Haut-Katanga after a joint task force seized several thousand tonnes of copper and cobalt and more than 500 trucks and pieces of equipment.
Why it matters: Congo is the world's largest cobalt producer and second largest copper producer, and a fraud probe reaching into industrial concessions held by CMOC, Glencore, Ivanhoe and Zijin raises the jurisdiction risk on a large share of global battery metal supply.
Technology
Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Oracle have disclosed more than 131 billion dollars of debt and equity funding plans in the past week, with Oracle's 20 billion dollar stock and notes offering on November 2 the newest piece.
Why it matters: The AI buildout is now financed in the capital markets at a scale that rivals sovereign issuance weeks, and the cost and reception of these deals has become the market's live test of whether the spending wave is durable.
Rates
The US Treasury expects to borrow $618 billion in privately held net marketable debt in the October to December quarter, $10 billion less than its August estimate, and $800 billion in January to March 2027.
Why it matters: The headline cut is a cash balance effect rather than a smaller financing need, and Wednesday's refunding statement will show whether the Treasury spreads this supply across the curve or starts cutting long end auction sizes.
Rates
The Federal Reserve announces its policy decision at 2:00 PM Eastern today, with futures markets pricing roughly a 90 percent chance it holds the federal funds target range at 3.75 to 4.00 percent on the day Americans vote in the midterm elections.
Why it matters: A hold is close to settled, so the market risk sits in Chair Kevin Warsh's 2:30 PM press conference and in how the statement frames December, where markets price a further quarter point hike as more likely than not.
Commodities
United States LNG exports reached their second highest monthly level on record in October, with shipments to Europe rising by 1 million tonnes to 6.89 million tonnes, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters.
Why it matters: Europe is pulling Atlantic cargoes at prices above 100 euros per megawatt hour for the first time in four years, which tightens the flexible supply available to Asia heading into winter.
Life Sciences
Vertex reported third quarter revenue of 3.44 billion dollars, up 12 percent year on year, and raised full year 2026 revenue guidance to 13.15 billion to 13.25 billion dollars.
Why it matters: Growth is broadening beyond cystic fibrosis, with Casgevy, Journavx and the newly acquired Palsonify adding revenue, but acquisition and launch costs held adjusted profit flat, so the diversification is being bought rather than earned yet.
Politics
Americans are voting on Tuesday, November 3 in midterm elections for all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and 36 governorships, with Republicans defending a 53 to 47 Senate majority and a House majority at the 218 seat mark.
Why it matters: Democrats need a net gain of three House seats and four Senate seats to control Congress for the final two years of President Trump's second term, and the result will be settled by a handful of Senate races in Texas, Ohio, Michigan, Alaska and Iowa.
Overnight markets - Tuesday, November 3, 2026 - Updated 7:15 AM
Semiconductors fell 3.79 percent and silver futures fell 3.30 percent in the latest session, while crude rose more than 2 percent on renewed Hormuz strikes and gold miners rose 2.67 percent against a falling metal price.
Semiconductors fell 3.79 percent, the tech sector fell 2.95 percent and Microsoft fell 2.83 percent, extending the AI trade selloff that put the Nasdaq 100 into correction last week. Today’s reporting ties the same move to base metals, where copper and tin fell as the AI unwind spread beyond equities (see today’s copper and tin story).
Silver futures fell 3.30 percent to 49.04 dollars an ounce and gold futures fell 1.38 percent, yet gold miners rose 2.67 percent and silver miners rose 1.50 percent. The divergence runs through today’s mining reporting, which noted miners rising on Monday even as the metals they produce settled lower, and through the World Gold Council figures showing central banks bought 321 tonnes in the third quarter, the fastest pace since 2024 (see today’s central bank gold buying story).
WTI crude rose 2.11 percent to 98.50 dollars a barrel and Brent rose 1.65 percent to 106.50 dollars. The bid followed a night of renewed strikes around the Strait of Hormuz, including confirmed United States strikes on Qeshm Island, and Aramco results that showed record refining margins capturing the war premium (see today’s Qeshm strikes story and today’s Aramco story).
Uranium miners fell 2.37 percent. No clear single driver appears in this morning’s reporting.
Amazon rose 2.20 percent, against the technology tape. Amazon features in today’s hyperscalers financing story as part of the group raising more than 131 billion dollars for the AI buildout, but no Amazon specific news in this morning’s reporting explains the rise.
The cross-market read is not a single risk move. Technology is de-rating, energy is pricing supply risk higher, and the miners are trading on positioning and central bank demand rather than on the spot metals. Two scheduled events dominate the day ahead: the Federal Reserve decision at 2:00 PM Eastern, where a hold is widely expected, and the United States midterm results tonight (see today’s FOMC preview and today’s midterms story).
