What matters today

  1. Commodities

Banks raise year end oil forecasts as buffers thin

ANZ raised its year end Brent forecast by 10 dollars to 105 dollars a barrel on Friday, joining UBS at 110 dollars, while Goldman Sachs holds at 90 dollars with risks skewed to the upside.

Why it matters: The forecast spread is now the market in miniature: banks that model the physical constraints see triple digit oil into year end, and even the lowest house view carries a 27 dollar risk premium that only a durable diplomatic settlement would remove.

  2. Life Sciences

Merck Keytruda sales beat as Qlex injection reaches $830 million

Merck reported third quarter sales up 5 percent to $18.1 billion on October 29, with combined Keytruda and Keytruda Qlex sales up 6 percent to $8.6 billion, including $830 million from the Qlex injection in its strongest quarter since launch.

Why it matters: Qlex is Merck's main device for carrying Keytruda revenue past the original drug's 2028 patent expiries, so its adoption pace, now ahead of analyst expectations, is the single most watched number in the print.

  3. Politics

Wall Street braces for Democratic gains in midterms

Wall Street is positioning for Democratic gains in the November 3 midterms, with prediction markets favouring a Democratic sweep of Congress and strategists mapping a sector reshuffle rather than a broad selloff.

Why it matters: A Democratic Congress would restrain the White House on spending, confirmations and regulation for the rest of the term, and investors say the repricing would land inside sectors, in banks, AI names and healthcare, more than in the index itself.

  4. Politics

Spain's snap election battle lines redrawn by train disaster

Wednesday's high speed train crash in Toledo province, which killed 68 people, has redrawn the battle lines of Spain's November 29 snap election, turning rail investment into the central charge against Pedro Sanchez's government a month before the vote.

Why it matters: Sanchez had been closing on the opposition by campaigning on housing; the second deadly crash on the same line in nine months shifts the election onto his government's record on basic infrastructure, the ground on which the People's Party and Vox are strongest.

  5. Rates

US economy grows 3.4 percent in third quarter

US real GDP rose at a 3.4 percent annual rate in the third quarter of 2026, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said in its advance estimate on October 29, up from 2.2 percent in the second quarter and above the roughly 3.1 percent consensus.

Why it matters: Growth this strong, led by private domestic demand, gives the Federal Reserve no growth reason to soften a stance that two of its voters already wanted to tighten this week.

  6. Rates

ECB forecasters lift inflation expectations for 2027

Professional forecasters raised their euro area inflation expectations to 3.0 percent for 2026 and 2.6 percent for 2027, up 0.3 and 0.4 percentage points, while holding 2028 and the longer term at 2.0 percent, the ECB's fourth quarter Survey of Professional Forecasters showed on October 30.

Why it matters: The near term path forecasters see is getting hotter on energy pass-through while the long term anchor holds at target, which supports the ECB's hold now, hike later posture rather than forcing its hand.

  7. Infrastructure

Commission disburses almost 6.5 billion euros under NextGenerationEU

The European Commission has disbursed almost 6.5 billion euros to France, Austria and Luxembourg under NextGenerationEU, the bloc's recovery programme.

Why it matters: The payment is among the last large disbursements of the Recovery and Resilience Facility, whose funded projects had to be completed by the end of August 2026.

  8. Mining

Abenojar Tungsten lists in London in biggest mining IPO since 2018

Spain's Abenojar Tungsten began unconditional trading in London on Friday after raising 170 million euros at 110 pence a share, the largest London mining flotation by money raised since 2018.

Why it matters: The listing funds the El Moto tungsten project in Spain, an EU strategic project, at a moment when tungsten prices have surged and Western buyers are paying for supply outside China.

  9. Technology

Alphabet shares plunge as AI spending overwhelms cloud growth

Alphabet shares fell 12.64 percent on Thursday to 283.82 dollars, wiping roughly 482 billion to 500 billion dollars from its market value, after third quarter free cash flow came in at negative 9.07 billion dollars on record capital spending of 51.4 billion dollars.

Why it matters: It was Alphabet's steepest one day fall since its 2004 listing, and it shows investors now price the AI buildout against the cash it consumes, not the cloud growth it produces.

Overnight markets - Friday, October 30, 2026 - Updated 7:24 AM

Why markets moved overnight

Alphabet fell 12.64 percent in the steepest one day drop since its 2004 listing, as investors repriced the AI buildout against the cash it consumes.

Alphabet was the market’s story. Its shares fell 12.64 percent to 283.82 dollars after third quarter capital spending hit a record 51.4 billion dollars and free cash flow swung to negative 9.07 billion dollars, erasing roughly half a trillion dollars of market value despite cloud revenue more than doubling (see today’s Alphabet story). Amazon fell 4.25 percent to 243.79 dollars in the same repricing of AI spending, even as its own AWS story today is a trillion dollar revenue ambition funded by 220 billion dollars of 2026 capital expenditure.

Oil tonnage was the strongest bid in the tables. Tanker freight rose 5.62 percent to 949.43 dollars, extending the record product tanker bookings in yesterday’s Scorpio coverage, while dry bulk eased, so the strength is specific to oil shipping (see today’s commodities roundup). WTI crude rose 2.00 percent to 104.04 dollars a barrel as banks raised oil forecasts on a tightening physical market (see today’s oil forecasts story); Brent’s table close eased 1.47 percent to 113.19 dollars, though Friday session reporting put it nearer 116 dollars.

Precious metals and their miners went the other way. Gold fell 0.84 percent to 3,997.40 dollars an ounce, below 4,000 dollars for the first time in this run of tables, on a hot September PCE print and rising December hike bets, and silver fell 2.71 percent to 50.78 dollars. Gold miners and Rio Tinto each fell 3.12 percent, following the metals rather than any company news of their own.

Bonds rallied through the noise. The US five year yield fell 7 basis points to 4.80 percent and the ten year fell back below 5 percent (see today’s Treasury yields story), as the mix of 3.4 percent third quarter GDP growth and a cooler quarterly price run rate left the December Fed decision open in both directions.

The synthesis is a stagflation flavoured tape rather than a simple risk off day: growth data strong, monthly inflation hot, the AI complex being repriced on cash rather than revenue, and the physical oil market, crude, freight and refining margins together, still tightening.
