The chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Eddie Yue, set out a vision for accelerating Hong Kong’s bond-market development in remarks at the Treasury Markets Summit 2026, published by the BIS on Monday. The plan rests on four pillars: a diversified, deep, dynamic and digital-native market. On the funding side, Yue said the HKMA is exploring a 7-day offshore RMB liquidity tendering and enhancing the RMB Business Facility to deepen offshore renminbi liquidity, alongside Northbound Bond Connect enhancements.
On infrastructure, he pointed to the Central Moneymarkets Unit, commercialised in 2024, and Hong Kong’s tokenised-bond milestones: the world’s first tokenised government green bond in 2023, a multi-currency digital bond in 2024, and tokenised central-bank money via e-HKD and e-CNY in 2025. The HKMA and the Securities and Futures Commission published a fixed-income market development roadmap in September 2025. The speech was delivered September 23 and published October 5.
