EU blocks Poland's €26 million aid for MAN Trucks factory expansion

The European Commission ruled Monday that Poland's planned €26 million support for expanding MAN Trucks' factory in Niepołomice is incompatible with EU state aid rules, barring Warsaw from disbursing it.

Why it matters: The decision closes a 15-month probe and signals the Commission will hold truck manufacturing to strict regional aid tests even where jobs and industrial policy are at stake.

Data as of Commission decision Oct 5, 2026; aid notified 2024

The Commission concluded that Poland’s plan to support the capacity extension of truck producer MAN Trucks Sp. z o.o.’s factory in Niepołomice, in the Małopolskie region, is not in line with EU state aid rules, and therefore Poland cannot disburse the aid, the Commission announced on October 5.

Poland notified the aid in 2024: around €26 million (PLN 116 million), comprising a direct grant of about €2.4 million and a corporate income tax exemption of about €23.7 million, for an investment expected to create about 1,400 jobs. The Commission opened an in-depth investigation in July 2025, doubting whether the aid was limited to what was necessary to attract the investment to the disadvantaged region and compatible with the guidelines on regional aid.

MAN Trucks, a manufacturer of light, mid-weight and heavy trucks, is part of the MAN Group and the Volkswagen Group. The ruling is final unless Poland challenges it before the EU courts.
