Discovery silver clears Mexico hurdle with key permits

Discovery Mining received two key environmental and land-use permits from the Mexican government for its Cordero silver project, advancing it toward development.

Why it matters: Permitting is the binding constraint on Mexican mining, so SEMARNAT sign-off is the single biggest de-risking step for one of the world's largest undeveloped silver deposits.

Discovery Mining (TSX: DSV; US-OTC: DSVSF) said it received two key environmental and land-use permits from the Mexican government, allowing the Canadian miner to advance its Cordero silver project toward development. Mexico’s environmental department, SEMARNAT, approved Cordero’s environmental impact assessment.

The permits are the kind that decide Mexican projects. Environmental and land-use authorizations have been the gating items across the sector, and a signed EIA is what separates a development asset from a speculative one. Cordero is among the world’s largest undeveloped silver deposits, and the approval puts Discovery on a path toward a construction decision rather than another permitting queue.

The next markers are the remaining construction-stage permits and the financing package. Both will test whether the Mexican permitting thaw that began this year extends to final authorizations for foreign-owned mines.
