Parliament approves 115 million euro AGILE defence innovation programme. MEPs voted 536 to 101 to create AGILE, a fast-track defence-innovation instrument for SMEs, start-ups and scale-ups developing emerging and disruptive defence tech, with a four-month time-to-grant and dedicated matchmaking with major defence primes. The legislation needs formal Council endorsement before publication, with operation beginning in early 2027 (status: passed Parliament; Council pending; EP release, October 6).
Former BND chief August Hanning arrested on espionage and treason suspicions. Hanning, 80, who led Germany’s foreign intelligence service from 1998 to 2005, was detained October 6 on orders of the Federal Public Prosecutor General on suspicion of treasonous espionage, state-secret betrayal and attempted high treason. Investigators allege a former chief of staff, Manfred D., passed him about 2,000 classified documents between 2010 and 2022 in exchange for payment, some used in Hanning’s private consulting work; the foreign service allegedly involved has not been named, though WDR/NDR/Süddeutsche Zeitung report it is not Russia (status: reported; Reuters/Bild, DW-reported investigation, October 6).
