Amazon will buy 690 MW of power from the 1,790 MW Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center in Lusby, Maryland, the state’s only nuclear plant and the source of about 80 percent of its carbon-free electricity. The 20-year PPA includes roughly 190 MW of new emissions-free capacity from plant uprates scheduled to come online between 2030 and 2032, and the companies also signed a related retail supply agreement covering Amazon operations across the 13-state PJM market.
The revenue certainty lets Constellation relicense the plant for another 20 years and funds more than $3 billion of infrastructure investment across the facility. Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez framed the deal as evidence that private investment can reinforce essential energy infrastructure, and said Amazon’s commitment creates a foundation for advanced nuclear development at the site.
The deal follows the same playbook as the Constellation-Google agreement covered in this edition’s technology beat: hyperscalers providing the long-term offtake that unlocks baseload generation investment in the capacity-constrained PJM region, with all Calvert Cliffs power continuing to flow into the regional grid.
