DNC sues Trump over taxpayer funded TV ads

Politics Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · Updated Oct 7, 2026 20:52

The Democratic National Committee sued the Trump administration Wednesday, alleging taxpayer-funded television ads glorifying Trump violate the ban on government propaganda and asking a court to stop further federal spending on them.

Why it matters: The ads have already cost more than $12 million, with $20 million in Homeland Security money tapped, and the lawsuit lands with early voting underway less than a month before the midterms.

Data as of AP and Reuters reporting on the complaint, October 7, 2026. Filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

The Democratic National Committee on Wednesday sued President Donald Trump’s administration over television advertisements that promoted his political message at taxpayer expense, calling the spots illegal government-sponsored propaganda. The complaint, filed in federal court in Washington, accuses Trump of personally directing the campaign and asks the court to declare the ads illegal and block further federal spending on them. The spots began airing in September and have already cost more than $12 million, according to AdImpact, with $20 million in Department of Homeland Security funding tapped to pay for them. Trump defended the ads Monday as “positive promotion for our Great U.S.A.” and said his MAGA Inc. super PAC would pay for them going forward, but a fifth ad aired Tuesday marked “paid for by the U.S. Government,” promoting his military actions in Venezuela, and he told reporters he had not committed to reimbursing money already spent. DNC Chair Ken Martin called it misuse of taxpayer dollars in “a last-ditch attempt to save Republicans in November.”
