Houthi strikes on Saudi airports kill three

Saudi Arabia said Wednesday that Houthi missile and drone strikes on Riyadh international airport and Abha airport killed three people and wounded 36.

Why it matters: The strikes bring the Yemen war's renewed escalation directly onto Saudi soil and test the Mecca defense pact activated two months ago.

Saudi Arabia announced Wednesday that Houthi missile and drone attacks on Riyadh international airport and Abha airport in the kingdom’s southwest killed three people, one Egyptian, one Algerian and one Sudanese national, and wounded 36, some seriously, alongside material damage. The Houthis had claimed responsibility for the strikes earlier in the day, after warning airlines that Saudi airspace was “not safe”; flight-tracking data showed traffic at Riyadh airport disrupted for days beforehand.

The Saudi-led coalition vowed the attacks would not go unpunished, saying it destroyed 82 military targets in retaliation, intercepted incoming fire and destroyed the ballistic-missile launch ramp used against Riyadh. The strikes cap a week of sharp escalation: Wednesday’s clashes in western Yemen killed at least 62, and more than 330 fighters have died since Monday, according to military sources on both sides.
