Tropical Storm Isaias, packing 40 mph winds 285 miles west of Progreso, Mexico, is forecast to become a Category 2 hurricane and strike the northern Gulf Coast, with Chevron evacuating nonessential staff from offshore platforms.

Why it matters: The storm's cone covers dozens of offshore rigs and major refineries including Chevron's 369,000-barrel-a-day Pascagoula plant, threatening fuel output in a market already pricing Iran-linked oil above $100.

Tropical Storm Isaias is forecast to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane with the northern Gulf Coast in its path later this week, according to the National Hurricane Center advisory cited Wednesday. The storm sat about 285 miles west of Progreso, Mexico with 40 mph sustained winds and is expected to reach hurricane strength Thursday, with a landfall cone spanning Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle.

Chevron is evacuating nonessential personnel from its Gulf platforms as dozens of offshore oil and gas rigs sit in the projected path. Chevron’s Pascagoula refinery on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, which processes 369,000 barrels of crude a day into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, is among the notable assets exposed. Isaias would be the first Atlantic hurricane of the season after September ended storm-free for the first time in 32 years.
