Kenya has recorded its first Ebola death, an imported case of the Bundibugyo strain that traveled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where a deadly outbreak continues spreading in the east. The victim, a man who had lived in the DRC for several years, flew to Nairobi via Kampala and Entebbe in Uganda on October 3, went straight to hospital, and died in the Kenyan capital on Monday.
Authorities have quarantined about 10 relatives, 21 health workers who treated him, and roughly 23 passengers and four crew from the Entebbe-Kampala flight, with the government working with the airline to reach them. No other infections have been found so far. WHO Representative Dr. Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo said the next few days are critical: “If we are able to ensure that we do proper contact listing, get all contacts, put them in quarantine, then that will be the key to really contain and stop any community spread.”
