Former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores are expected to face new charges over alleged torture of Americans held in Venezuelan custody, with an announcement possible as early as Thursday.

Why it matters: New torture charges would widen the US prosecution beyond narcoterrorism and harden Washington's posture toward the Rodriguez government in Caracas.

Former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores are expected to face new US charges over alleged torture of Americans who were in Venezuelan custody in recent years, CNN reported Wednesday, with the announcement possibly coming as early as Thursday. Maduro, 63, and Flores, 69, were captured from their Caracas home by US special forces on January 3 and are jailed in Brooklyn pending trial on narcoterrorism conspiracy charges, to which they have pleaded not guilty.

The report was carried by the BBC, Fox News, Arab News, Clarin, El Nacional and others, all citing the same CNN sourcing. The charges, if filed, would add a human-rights dimension to a prosecution that has so far centered on drug trafficking, and they land while Washington negotiates the terms of Venezuela’s oil reopening with acting president Delcy Rodriguez.
