Also notable in technology: Ghost, Melius, Underdog, Hark and more

Ghost's $11 million raise for a $3,499 personal-AI computer, Melius's $20 million for AI ad generation, two new privacy-first AI assistants, and a busy day in venture, media and AI safety disclosure.

Why it matters: The personal-AI assistant race is splitting into privacy-first local hardware and agent software, while Anthropic's leaked IPO numbers sharpen the funding debate.

The personal-AI computer keeps getting built. Ghost, a startup from 19-year-old Zain Javaid, emerged from stealth with an $11 million seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz and a $3,499 device called Core built specifically to run AI agents continuously. It ships with an Nvidia RTX Pro 4000 SFF Blackwell GPU bundled into the price, three models preinstalled (Qwen-3.8-Next, Qwen-3.8-27B and Gemma-4-31B), and a firewall that monitors every outgoing network request for data exfiltration. Preorders opened Monday; shipping starts the last week of October. The pitch is that personal memory and models run locally, encrypted, with no cloud provider — including Ghost — able to meaningfully access them.

The AI advertising pipeline keeps filling. Melius, founded by three ex-Ramp engineers, raised $20 million in a Series A led by CRV on top of a $5 million General Catalyst seed, for a platform that generates ad campaigns, images and videos in plain language. The team scrapped its first product — an AI performance-marketing tool built over six months — and rebuilt from zero; it says it passed $1 million in annualized revenue within two months of coming out of stealth in July. It competes with Higgsfield, valued at $5.4 billion in August with over $700 million in annualized revenue.

Privacy is the week-old theme in AI assistants. Sigil Wen, a Thiel Fellow, launched an invite-only beta of Underdog, an assistant that runs wholly on-device on Macs and Windows PCs with a 27-billion-parameter reasoning model fine-tuned from Qwen3.8-27B, and plans to monetize through a small cut of Stripe payment transactions rather than data or subscriptions. Separately, Brett Adcock’s Hark released Hark Pro, a full-screen computer-use agent (free tier plus subscription for heavy users) that shows users how the agent navigates the web to build trust, with an AI-native device promised for 2027.

Anthropic’s leaked IPO prospectus keeps producing uncomfortable numbers. Per Financial Times reporting discussed by The Register, the document devotes roughly a third of itself to existential AI risk while showing an $8 billion loss on $4.6 billion of revenue and plans to spend around $500 billion on cloud computing over the next few years. The figures are leaked, not filed, and The Register notes the document’s adjusted-basis path to profitability strips out training costs — but the shape is consistent with the Lambda story above: revenue growing fast, spend growing faster.

Spotify expanded audiobooks to more than 180 markets starting Wednesday, reaching 750 million users with over 350,000 titles in 120-plus languages, a direct push against Audible. Premium subscribers get 12 hours of listening in eligible countries, a standalone Audiobook+ plan offers 15 hours, and the company says Audiobook+ has passed 1 million subscribers and $100 million in annual recurring revenue since launching last year. Audiobook listening hours are up 30 percent year over year.

JioHotstar is taking the partnership route into the Middle East and North Africa. Reliance’s streamer, with more than 500 million monthly active users, gets a dedicated section inside Starzplay’s app, following its stand-alone launches in the UK, Canada and Singapore. The Starzplay sports bundle with cricket is priced at AED 49.99 a month; financial terms were not disclosed. And OpenAI is testing visual ads alongside ChatGPT image-generation results, an early monetization step as compute spend keeps climbing (The Register, October 5).
