China markets reopen after Golden Week shutdown

Commodities Thursday, October 8, 2026 · Updated Oct 8, 2026 07:33

Mainland Chinese markets reopened Thursday after a week-long Golden Week closure, with copper and other metals firming in the first session as Shanghai price discovery returned.

Why it matters: The reopening is the confirmation test for copper's holiday record run, set while the world's largest metals consumer was closed.

Data as of Markets reopened October 8, 2026 (Beijing time); Shanghai close September 30, 2026; copper at 7:00 AM EDT October 8

Chinese mainland markets reopened at 9:30 AM Beijing time Thursday after closing October 1-7 for Golden Week, with SHFE, DCE and CZCE resuming and SHFE night trading returning Thursday evening after a call auction from 08:55 to 09:00 local. The Shanghai Composite closed September 30 at 3,842.19, up 0.31 percent on the day but down 3.61 percent for September. Hong Kong, which stayed open through the holiday, slumped 2.6 percent on October 2 on surging US Treasury yields before rallying about 1 percent on October 6.

Metals opened the mainland session in a positive mood, with copper gaining alongside other metals as traders repriced the week’s offshore moves. The 7:00 AM EDT table showed copper at $6.63 a pound, up 0.53 percent, against the backdrop of LME prices near records and the Centinela strike beginning in Chile. The reopening flow is the first read on whether Chinese physical buying validates the speculative run-up or treats it as a selling opportunity.
