EU says gas system ready for winter despite low storage

The European Commission said Thursday the EU gas system is flexible enough to meet demand this winter despite storage levels running below historical norms, citing higher LNG import capacity and lower demand.

Why it matters: The winter outlook anchors the EU's supply narrative as the bloc prepares for the end of Russian long-term LNG contracts at the start of next year, with TTF and European diesel exposed to any cold snap.

Data as of European Commission announcement October 8, 2026; the ENTSOG 2026-2027 Winter Supply Outlook itself was not independently opened.

The EU’s Gas Coordination Group met Thursday to take stock of the gas market, welcoming the transmission-system operators’ ENTSOG 2026-2027 Winter Supply Outlook published the same day. The report confirms that while storage levels sit below historical levels, the EU gas system is sufficiently flexible to meet winter demand, with higher LNG import capacity compensating for thinner inventories. ENTSOG cautioned that adequate storage must be kept through the season to handle late-winter cold spells and to ease refilling next summer.

The Commission also presented implementation of the REPowerEU gas regulation, focused on preparations for the end of Russian long-term LNG import contracts from the start of next year. The statement marks a contrast with the winter of 2021-2022, when the EU had far less supply diversification and LNG import capacity.
