US sanctions 22 more tankers in Iran shadow-fleet crackdown

Commodities Thursday, October 8, 2026 · Updated Oct 8, 2026 15:44

The United States on Thursday sanctioned 22 tankers and dozens of people and companies tied to Iran's oil trade, saying the action effectively neutralizes the vast majority of Tehran's remaining shadow-fleet network.

Why it matters: The designations deepen Washington's squeeze on Iran's last petroleum revenue channels alongside a naval blockade, with sanctioned vessels spread across more than a dozen flag jurisdictions.

Data as of US Treasury and State Department designations October 8, 2026, reported by gCaptain; the Treasury announcement itself was not independently opened. Single-sourced.

The Treasury Department designated 17 vessels and their associated companies under Operation Economic Outcast, while the State Department sanctioned another five vessels, 10 entities and six individuals involved in trading Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products. Among the named vessels were the Cameroon-flagged tanker SHENZHEN, which Treasury said moved more than 3.5 million barrels of Iranian crude since November 2025, and the Vanuatu-flagged TINA 5, which allegedly carried more than 1.5 million barrels in August alone.

Treasury said the measures effectively neutralize the vast majority of Iran’s remaining shadow-fleet network, though maritime tracker TankerTrackers.com says 173 Iran-linked tankers remain outside US sanctions. Treasury also removed two vessels, HAKUNA MATATA and PINOCCHIO, from its sanctions list after they left Iran’s shadow fleet and were sold to operators not subject to sanctions.
