The WTO more than doubled its 2026 forecast for world merchandise trade growth to 3.9 percent from 1.9 percent, crediting AI-driven demand for nearly half of the first-half expansion despite Middle East war disruptions.
Why it matters: A resilient goods-trade picture undercuts the recession-through-tariffs narrative and reframes the policy debate toward services and energy costs rather than a broad trade collapse.

The WTO’s October trade outlook puts 2026 world merchandise trade growth at 3.9 percent, more than double the 1.9 percent it projected in March. First-half goods trade grew 3.5 percent year on year, with AI-related demand for semiconductors, data centers and digital infrastructure accounting for nearly half of the increase, even as the Middle East conflict cut regional crude exports about 24 percent and LNG exports about 47 percent.
The report cuts the 2026 services trade forecast to 3.3 percent from 4.8 percent, citing travel weakness from higher fuel costs, and puts 2027 goods growth at 4.1 percent with world GDP at 2.6 percent this year and 2.9 percent next.
