Germany has decided to buy new mass-produced cruise missiles with a range of about 1,500 km, targeting first deliveries in 2027, according to the army's inspector general.

Why it matters: The move advances Berlin's push to field affordable long-range strike weapons that can saturate enemy air defenses, part of a broader German rearmament.

Data as of UNIAN report citing RND on remarks by German Army Inspector Major General Christian Freuding, October 9, 2026 (article opened and read in full, in Ukrainian). No German government confirmation yet seen.

German Army Inspector Major General Christian Freuding said the decision to buy new mass-produced cruise missiles with a range of about 1,500 km has been made, with the government intending to buy them from the United States, according to RND via UNIAN. Two market-available systems are in focus, both still requiring Bundeswehr certification, with first delivery targeted for 2027. US defense firm Covenant, which opened a cruise-missile plant in Leipzig this week, plans to build its Anthem missile there from 2027, claiming a unit cost under $1 million against several million for comparable systems.
