Musk asks if Ambani is 'real boss of India' as Starlink stalls

Technology Friday, October 9, 2026 · Updated Oct 9, 2026 01:48

Elon Musk asked whether Mukesh Ambani is "the real boss of India" in a social-media post on Thursday, accusing unnamed Indian oligarchs of a "monopolistic chokehold" that has kept Starlink out of India despite five years of compliance work.

Why it matters: The public spat pits Starlink against India's two dominant telecom operators as New Delhi stalls its satellite-internet approval, and against Jio's own planned 1,600-satellite network.

Elon Musk asked whether Mukesh Ambani is “the real boss of India” in a social-media post on Thursday, a day after accusing unnamed Indian oligarchs of maintaining a “monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people” that has kept Starlink out of India despite five years of complying with “every single law and requirement.”

Starlink won an Indian license in July 2025 and signed cross-selling pacts with Ambani’s Jio Platforms and Airtel in March, but Bloomberg has reported New Delhi froze approvals over concerns Starlink terminals could be used without being licensed; meanwhile Jio is building its own low-earth-orbit network of about 1,600 satellites and 23 ground stations, and Jio Platforms chief Akash Ambani has said India needs its own indigenous technology stack. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi replied to Musk’s post with “Wait till you meet the other one,” a veiled reference to Gautam Adani, and Musk responded “This is indeed troubling”; Reliance Industries did not respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
