Politics Friday, October 9, 2026 · Updated Oct 9, 2026 14:50

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama's southern coast on Friday afternoon, prompting tsunami warnings for Colombia, Ecuador and much of Central America's Pacific coast.

Why it matters: The shallow quake near the Pacific side of the isthmus is the strongest to hit Panama in years, and the tsunami warning puts coastal infrastructure and shipping on alert.
