Friedkin Group opens Everton to controlling-stake sale

The Friedkin Group said Friday it is open to selling a controlling stake in Everton, less than two years after acquiring the Premier League club from Farhad Moshiri.

Why it matters: A quick US-ownership exit in a top European club signals how quickly private capital now expects to recycle sports assets once stadium and balance-sheet work is done.

Data as of TFG/Everton statement October 9, 2026. Moelis appointment reported by the club; no asking price or buyer confirmed.

Everton’s owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG), said Friday they are open to selling a controlling stake in the club as part of efforts to attract fresh investment, less than two years after the US-based group acquired Everton from Farhad Moshiri in December 2024. The club said it has retained investment bank Moelis & Company to advise on the process and will make no further comment while it runs.

TFG framed the move as a handover after stabilisation work: the group’s statement said its immediate priority on taking over had been to provide the stability, investment and support needed to secure the club’s future, including bringing the new Hill Dickinson Stadium to completion, and that with that foundation now in place “the time is right to consider the next chapter.” TFG said it would only consider proposals from parties it believes could build on the progress made, and will continue supporting the club throughout the process. TFG also owns AS Roma and French side AS Cannes.

The announcement landed as a surprise even inside the club: manager David Moyes told reporters Friday he only learned of it that morning, ahead of Sunday’s league game at Hull City, after a summer transfer window that drew supporter criticism for generating significant income through player sales with limited additions. Everton sit seventh in the table after five games. No price has been disclosed; one secondary report put a possible valuation near 800 million pounds including debt, unconfirmed.
