Politics Saturday, October 10, 2026 · Updated Oct 10, 2026 03:51

Hurricane Simon intensified into a Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds early Saturday as it advanced on Mexico's Pacific coast, prompting evacuations in coastal Jalisco and shelter orders for Puerto Vallarta's tourism sector.

Why it matters: A major hurricane landfall near Puerto Vallarta would hit one of Mexico's most visited tourist corridors and test emergency response across four states already under flood and landslide warnings.

Hurricane Simon gained strength into a powerful Category 4 hurricane early Saturday, with maximum sustained winds of 225 kilometers per hour (140 mph), the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported, as it moved toward Mexico’s Pacific coast. The center forecast 10 to 20 inches of rain across parts of southwestern Mexico, with some areas receiving up to 30 inches, and urged residents to take immediate preparedness measures.

Jalisco authorities suspended classes Friday and Monday in 22 coastal municipalities and began evacuating dozens of people from risk zones. The tourism sector in Puerto Vallarta, a destination popular with American travelers, was told to make sure workers and visitors are in shelters or safe areas. Forecasters warned Friday of flooding and dangerous landslides along the Jalisco coast and in parts of Michoacán, Colima and Nayarit.
