Kanlaon volcano on Negros Island erupted Saturday afternoon in a moderately explosive event that began shortly before 12:30 p.m. and ended around 12:48 p.m. local time, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said, sending an ash plume five to six kilometers above the summit drifting north-northeast. The Office of Civil Defense reported ashfall and sulfuric odor across parts of Negros Occidental, with about 10 barangays affected.

State volcanologists held Alert Level 2, warning of increasing unrest and the possibility of sudden steam-driven or explosive eruptions. The national disaster agency urged residents in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental to wear masks and protective eyewear, stay indoors when possible, and keep clear of the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone.
