The Panama-flagged crude tanker MT GEM No.2, with 22 Indian crew aboard, was targeted by a drone at the Sharjah anchorage in the UAE, with India's government saying all seafarers are safe and no attacker named.
Why it matters: Another drone targeting inside Gulf waters keeps the Hormuz tanker-war risk premium on crude and freight, and puts New Delhi's new shipping-security group to an early test.
Data as of Marine Insight, October 10, 2026 (article opened and read in full); crew-safety statement is India's government via X, as reported. The attack itself is so far reported by a single outlet, so details on damage, timing and attribution are unconfirmed.
The Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MT GEM No.2 became the target of a drone attack at the Sharjah anchorage in the Arabian Gulf, with all 22 Indian crew members reported safe. India’s government said on X that it is in contact with the ship’s management company; no attacker has been named and no damage or casualties have been reported.
The incident lands as attacks on ships in the Gulf and Black Sea have multiplied in recent weeks. India recently co-founded a Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers with 25 countries, co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, which held its first meeting in New York.
