Standard Bank Group is moving to invest up to $200 million in Nigerian fintech OPay through a private placement alongside its planned New York Stock Exchange listing.

Why it matters: Africa's largest bank by assets is buying into the continent's biggest digital payments distribution network, pairing banking infrastructure with a 50 million-user platform.

Data as of Reported October 9, 2026, per OPay's SEC registration statement. Private placement subject to the IPO completing and regulatory approvals.

Standard Bank Group will invest as much as $200 million in OPay through Stanbic Africa Holdings in a private placement alongside the Nigerian-focused fintech’s planned listing of American depositary shares on the NYSE, according to OPay’s registration statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The stake is capped at the lowest of $200 million, 0.98 percent of Standard Bank’s qualifying regulatory capital excluding unappropriated profit, or 4.99 percent of OPay at the IPO price, and carries a 12-month sale restriction.

OPay’s numbers show why the bank wants in: revenue more than doubled to $467.1 million in the first half of 2026 with net income of $90.9 million, after $536.3 million of 2025 revenue and a swing to $72.5 million of net income from a $50.8 million 2024 loss. It had 50.1 million monthly active users at the end of July and $339.1 billion of gross transaction value in the first half, with Nigeria accounting for 89.5 percent of revenue. Pre-offering shareholders include founder Zhou Yahui at 21.3 percent, Opera at 8.6 percent and SoftBank at 6.6 percent from its 2021 round at a roughly $2 billion valuation.

The relationship goes beyond capital: the companies signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding in August to explore combining Standard Bank’s banking infrastructure and African footprint with OPay’s merchant network across digital banking, payments, lending and remittances. Standard Bank of South Africa is also one of four representatives of the IPO underwriters alongside Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and CICC, and Africa Regions chief executive Lungisa Fuzile is expected to join OPay’s board as a non-executive director once the placement closes.
