Tesla renames Full Self-Driving to Assisted Driving in Europe

Technology Saturday, October 10, 2026 · Updated Oct 10, 2026 07:13

Tesla has renamed its driver-assistance system from "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" to "Tesla Assisted Driving" in Europe after Germany's transport ministry called the old name misleading.

Why it matters: The rename is a regulatory retreat that could smooth Tesla's path to EU-wide approval of supervised FSD, and it sets a precedent for how Brussels polices marketing claims on driver-assistance systems.

Data as of Announcement October 2026; German transport ministry release and Musk X posts via TechCrunch reporting, article read in full. Independent confirmation of the rename by Electrek, October 9, and Reuters reporting October 8 on Tesla's European approval campaign. Name change applies to European Tesla sites only.

Tesla has renamed its “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” system to “Tesla Assisted Driving” on its European websites, a concession to Germany’s transport ministry that the “Full Self-Driving” label was misleading because the system does not perform the entire driving task.

Germany’s transport minister Steffen Bilger said he spoke with Tesla last month and the company suggested the name change. Bilger will now advocate for EU-wide approval of the supervised system ahead of a European Commission vote possibly later this year, and Elon Musk thanked Bilger on X this week.

The rename follows a turbulent European rollout. The Netherlands became the first European country to approve supervised FSD in March 2026, but Reuters reported on October 8 that Tesla’s approval campaign rested on what it called faulty company safety research. Earlier this year Tesla discontinued the Autopilot brand after a court ruled the name was deceptive marketing, and its driver-assistance systems remain under federal investigation in the US with multiple lawsuits and dozens of deaths linked to Autopilot use.

For Tesla, the timing is commercial as well as legal: the company is counting on supervised FSD approval across the EU to unlock subscription revenue from its European fleet, and a minister-blessed label lowers the political cost of a yes vote in Brussels.
