The UN human rights office voiced concern Saturday over reports of mass detentions in Delhi of demonstrators, protest leaders, civil society members, lawyers and journalists before and during a large protest, and called for anyone arbitrarily detained to be released immediately and unconditionally.

Why it matters: The Delhi demonstration targeted the chief of the election commission over voter-roll revisions ahead of state elections, putting electoral-integrity disputes at the center of India's protest politics.

The UN human rights office (OHCHR) voiced concern Saturday over reports of mass detentions in India of demonstrators, protest leaders, civil society members, lawyers and journalists, before and during large-scale protests in Delhi. Spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan called on authorities to ensure the right to peaceful assembly is fully respected, said restrictions on peaceful protests must meet strict tests of necessity and proportionality, and urged law enforcement to show utmost restraint.

The demonstration was called by a youth-led movement seeking electoral reforms ahead of state elections, with its chief demand being the resignation of the official heading India’s election commission. Police had refused permission for the protest at its planned venue in the capital, and the movement’s leaders were reportedly among those detained.
