US delists Myanmar tycoon daughter in sanctions shift

Politics Saturday, October 10, 2026 · Updated Oct 10, 2026 05:41

The US Treasury removed Theint Win Htet, daughter of a businessman accused of bankrolling Myanmar's junta, from its sanctions list on Friday, days after reports that the Trump administration has reopened talks with the military government.

Why it matters: The delisting is the latest sign of a policy break from the post-2021 sanctions regime against the junta, which has presided over a civil war that killed about 100,000 people and displaced 3.5 million.

The US Treasury removed Theint Win Htet from its sanctions list on Friday, ending a case that began when the Biden administration targeted her father’s Shwe Byain Phyu Group in January 2024 over fuel supplies to the military. Her lawsuit argued she has no role in the family business, and her lawyer moved to dismiss the case after the delisting. The move follows a Reuters report that the Trump administration has opened talks with Myanmar’s government, and drew condemnation from the advocacy group Justice For Myanmar, which called it deplorable while the military escalates attacks on civilians.
