Michael Roberson, the former lead commissioning engineer at xAI who led end-to-end commissioning for the Colossus, Macrohard, and Macroharder data centers, has joined OpenAI’s infrastructure division as a commissioning program manager. Roberson spent a year at xAI, left in April 2026 for a three-month stint at Fluidstack, and announced the OpenAI move on LinkedIn, saying he will help bring data centers from construction through testing and into operations.
Roberson is not alone. Per the same reporting, several other SpaceXAI staff have joined OpenAI, including site lead Aakash Verma, Amin Golnabi, Andrej Sulek, and Johnathan Henley, alongside Nikhil Kumar, an eight-year mechanical engineer from Meta, Naeem Dogar, Meta’s former data center deployment strategy lead, and a group from offshore driller Valaris who joined OpenAI’s infrastructure and delivery teams in August 2026.
The pipeline tells the story of the buildout’s labor market: the people commissioning frontier datacenters are a small, mobile pool, and OpenAI is recruiting them from Musk’s operations and the offshore energy industry alike.
