Brazil electoral court suspends Lula ads targeting Flavio Bolsonaro

Politics Sunday, October 11, 2026 · Updated Oct 11, 2026 10:47

Brazil's electoral court suspended Lula campaign ads that linked senator Flavio Bolsonaro to a Banco Master scandal and a running-mate to a criminal investigation, ruling the spots lacked a minimal factual basis.

Why it matters: The injunction lands two weeks before the presidential runoff against Flavio Bolsonaro and tightens the legal fight over campaign claims, as the same court separately ordered Meta to explain restrictions on Lula's posts.

Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) ordered Lula’s campaign to pull electoral ads that linked senator Flavio Bolsonaro to alleged dealings with Banco Master and tied his running-mate Alfredo Gaspar to a criminal investigation. TSE president Kassio Nunes Marques granted a preliminary injunction on October 10, finding the spots omitted relevant information and made criminal imputations without a minimal factual basis, in violation of the electoral law’s ban on calumny and defamation.

The ads cited leaked messages pointing to a US$24 million negotiation between Flavio Bolsonaro and former Banco Master owner Daniel Vorcaro, and a statutory-rape investigation against Gaspar that the Supreme Court archived after the prosecutor’s office cited lack of evidence. The court ordered the material removed from the free electoral airtime until the merits are judged. Lula faces Flavio Bolsonaro in the presidential runoff.
