Ebola spreads to new DRC health zone as Kenya confirms imported death

Life Sciences Sunday, October 11, 2026 · Updated Oct 11, 2026 01:50

Ebola has reached a new health zone in eastern DRC while Kenya confirmed a fatal imported case, as the WHO tally passes 8,700 cases and treatment capacity strains.

Why it matters: Cross-border spread into Kenya and treatment centers turning away confirmed patients raise the risk that the Bundibugyo outbreak, for which no approved vaccine exists, outruns containment.

Data as of Overnight Sunday, October 11, 2026. Single-outlet account (Al Jazeera, opened and read in full); WHO, MSF and Africa CDC figures are as reported by Al Jazeera. Corroborating feed items on the outbreak exist (France24, BBC Africa, Le Monde, Egypt Independent, seen in feed metadata) but were not opened and read; treat case counts as provisional.

The World Health Organization said Ebola has spread to Alimbongo health zone in North Kivu, with four confirmed cases including two deaths there as of October 6. Kenya confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease the same day: a Kenyan citizen who fell ill in the DRC, traveled through Uganda to Nairobi on October 3, and died on October 5, with Kenyan authorities identifying 28 contacts. The WHO has recorded 8,728 confirmed cases and 4,205 deaths in the DRC outbreak so far, and Doctors Without Borders warns treatment centers in North Kivu are at capacity, with roughly a third of confirmed patients treated in non-specialized facilities.
