Mining also notable: Nigeria week, Zambia, Sudan, lithium triangle

Mining Sunday, October 11, 2026 · Updated Oct 11, 2026 07:10

Five shorter items: Nigeria Mining Week opens October 12, Canada courts Zambia's mining sector, gold enters Sudan's conflict story, and new analysis on the Lithium Triangle's extraction bottleneck.

Why it matters: The marginal items of a thin Sunday: events to watch and analytical context on lithium supply, with one resource-conflict claim kept at arm's length.

Data as of Items published Oct 9-10, 2026; retrieval Oct 11; several single-sourced; Sudan item treated as unverified narrative

Nigeria Mining Week opens October 12 in Abuja. The 11th edition, organized by the Miners Association of Nigeria with PwC Nigeria and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative as transparency partner, runs October 12-14 under the theme “Unlocking Investment and Growth through Partnerships.” Organizers expect more than 3,000 participants and 90 sponsors and exhibitors, with seven strategic forums including deal rooms; the agenda spans Nigeria’s role in battery, magnet and EV supply chains, the gold value chain, integrated steel, and iron ore. PwC Nigeria’s mining lead Cyril Azobu framed the pitch as Nigeria positioning itself as a destination for processing and value addition, not just raw minerals. Worth watching for licensing or fiscal announcements that could move the Africa critical-minerals map. (News Agency of Nigeria, Oct 10; single-sourced to MAN’s marketing statement.)

Canada courts Zambia’s mining sector. Canadian High Commissioner to Zambia Corry Gaal said Ottawa is keen to attract more Canadian investors to Zambia’s mining and renewable energy sectors, in comments on the sidelines of President Hichilema’s address opening the 14th National Assembly in Lusaka. Gaal, the first resident Canadian high commissioner to Zambia in 15 years, said Canada is already a major foreign investor in Zambia through involvement in two major mines she did not name. The message fits Zambia’s post-debt-restructuring push for copper-belt investment; no new project commitments were announced. (Lusaka Times, Oct 10.)

Gold enters the Sudan conflict narrative. A report carried by allAfrica attributes the risk of escalating fighting between the SPLM-N and local forces in Kauda (South Kordofan) and Blue Nile partly to gold, a resource-conflict claim that remains unverified. What is independently documented: TASIS-aligned SPLM-N and RSF fighters seized the Al-Kadalou area near Ed Damazin in early October after heavy clashes (The Sudan Times, Oct 4), and RSF commander Hemedti ordered a mediation push in the Nuba Mountains over fighting between SPLM-N and the Atoro community (Sudan Times, Oct 7). Separately, the Otoro have opposed the SPLM-N alliance with the RSF and the RSF’s alleged use of Otoro areas for mining, per conflict reporting. Treat the “gold ignites fighting” framing as narrative until a second independent outlet corroborates the mineral-economics angle specifically. The Lithium Triangle’s extraction bottleneck, mapped. New analysis argues Argentina, Bolivia and Chile hold about 43 percent of the world’s identified lithium resources and 64 million tonnes between them, but brine-chemistry differences and water availability keep geology from becoming supply. It is an analytical piece, not a news event, but it is the right frame for this week’s DLE news: the constraint on the triangle is process chemistry and water, not rock. (The Northern Miner, Oct 9; analytical, paywalled beyond the lede.)

Quebec’s graphite ambition. A Northern Miner infographic examines whether Quebec can build Canada’s first domestic graphite supply chain, the latest in the outlet’s critical-minerals mapping series. Graphite is the battery metal with the heaviest China dependence in the anode chain, so a Quebec chain is strategically legible even without a specific project catalyst attached.
