Washington puts a currency hawk on China at Treasury, Nigeria's 2027 jockeying intensifies, and Bank of America prices a Democratic sweep.

Why it matters: Smaller items with real signal: personnel moves, pre-election positioning and market sensitivity ahead of November.

Data as of Sunday, October 11, 2026. Treasury appointment per the department's own release (opened and read). Nigeria, Zambia, BofA and Niger Delta items per feed items; not opened beyond feed metadata, treated as reported.

Washington installs a China currency hawk at Treasury. Secretary Scott Bessent appointed economist Judy Shelton as a counselor in the Office of the Secretary, where she will advise on currency policy “with a particular focus on evaluating financial conditions in China,” per the October 9 Treasury release. Shelton, a former US director at the EBRD and chairman of the National Endowment for Democracy, is a longtime voice for sound-money and dollar-focused policy; her remit lands as US-China trade and FX tensions run hot ahead of the midterms.

Nigeria’s 2027 race keeps building. Governors of the north-central states endorsed President Tinubu’s re-election, while SGF Akume argued the 1999 North-South power rotation agreement favors Tinubu’s bid, setting up a regional-alignment push weeks before the Kaduna campaign flag-off on October 24. Atiku countered that the 2027 election is “a rescue mission for Nigerians.” Separately, a foundation launched an initiative to prevent election violence in the Niger Delta, and SERAP sued the Central Bank of Nigeria over $6.23 million in allegedly missing election funds plus 1.63 trillion naira in other unaccounted public money.

Zambia takes stock of the 2026 vote. The Lusaka Times began a post-election autopsy series, with opposition voices rejecting President Hichilema’s “free and fair” characterization, days after he opened the 280-seat parliament where his UPND holds 169 seats, short of a two-thirds majority.

Bank of America prices a blue wave. BofA analysts, per MarketWatch, mapped how far stocks could fall if Democrats sweep Congress on November 3, adding a Wall Street pricing layer to the Senate forecast movement that already has Kansas at toss-up and New Hampshire tightening.

US midterms: a quiet Sunday. After Saturday’s cascade of state-by-state deltas, no genuinely new poll or development moved overnight; the map stands where yesterday’s update left it: Kansas 45-45, Iowa split, Maine Jackson slightly ahead, Ohio Brown ahead, New Hampshire tightening, with 23 days to Election Day.

Delhi: watch the Sunday legal track. The overnight watcher already folded the court-ordered release of the CJP leaders and the Supreme Court’s rare Sunday hearing into the main Delhi story; see today’s updated file for the full state of play.

Analytical, not news: The Diplomat makes the case that Kim Jong Un should seek a fourth Trump summit, an argument about diplomatic incentives rather than an imminent meeting.

EU development policy: European Commissioner Lahbib delivered press remarks at the Foreign Affairs Council on Development on October 9 (EC Press Corner, speech_26_2129); no material new commitment was evident from the feed item.
