Two Lebanese men were killed on Sunday in southern Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil district during the annual olive harvest. One died in Yater from Israeli shelling that hit the outskirts of town while he inspected his land and olive harvest, according to Lebanon’s official National News Agency; the other died in Froun when a munition left over from earlier fighting exploded as he and others tended their trees.
The Lebanese army blamed Israeli tank fire for the Yater death and called the ongoing attacks “a flagrant breach of existing agreements,” referring to the June ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. The Yater municipality urged residents to avoid the outskirts of town and not cross the earthen barrier separating unsafe neighborhoods, and residents in Froun called off the harvest until the Lebanese army completes decontamination of the village. Al Jazeera notes that since the June agreement, violence in the south has lessened but not stopped, with Lebanon’s war with Israel reported to have killed more than 4,300 people.
