Aphias Capital, a San Francisco-based lower-middle-market private equity firm, announced the final close of Aphias Capital Fund I with just over $1.05 billion in total capital commitments. The oversubscribed fund surpassed its $900 million target, with investor demand exceeding the fund’s hard cap.
The investor base is a broad institutional roster: public pension plans, health systems, insurance companies, endowments and foundations, family offices, funds of funds and other financial institutions, many with long-standing relationships with the Aphias team. PJT Park Hill served as exclusive placement agent and Kirkland & Ellis as fund counsel.
The firm is built around healthcare services and essential services in North America, making control investments in companies with $5 million to $30 million of EBITDA, typically as the first or second institutional investor or through corporate carve-outs. Founder and managing partner Rob Wolfson previously worked in healthcare investing at H.I.G. Capital; nine of the firm’s investment and operating professionals worked together at H.I.G., many for more than a decade.
Wolfson said the team spent years working together on lower-middle-market services companies and pitched the segment’s structural advantages: a vast universe of companies where a sponsor can partner earlier in their lifecycles. The close extends a run of healthcare-specialist fundraising success into the fourth quarter.
