Also notable: methane rules, Aramco inventories, copper and gold projects

Brussels opened feedback on methane emissions reporting templates, Aramco's chief warned that rebuilding oil inventories could take two years, and Australian copper and gold projects advanced their footprints.

Why it matters: The smaller items trace the regulatory tightening around gas, the physical market's slow inventory repair, and continued investment into copper and gold supply despite geopolitical noise.

Data as of Monday, October 12, 2026. Items below second-line stories with limited independent sourcing; single-sourced items flagged. The IEA board date is from the agency's October 7 statement.

The European Commission’s energy directorate launched a call for feedback on methane emissions reporting templates, the next step in the EU’s effort to quantify and curb methane across the gas supply chain. The move matters for LNG and pipeline gas suppliers selling into Europe, who face progressively tighter reporting and performance standards.

Aramco chief executive Amin Nasser warned that rebuilding global oil inventories could take two years and flagged global supply risks, per Saudi outlet Maaal, a rare public inventory call from the world’s largest producer that sits alongside Riyadh’s 10-million-barrel-a-day pipeline bypass plan. Treat it as the company’s narrative until the full remarks are published; the warning landed at the World Petroleum Congress in Riyadh.

In Australia, Astral Resources increased the gold resource at its Spargoville project, and Austral Resources doubled its McLeod Hill copper footprint, two incremental additions to future supply in a market where Chile’s El Teniente and Centinela disruptions are squeezing the present. The South China Morning Post argued that Shenzhen’s jewellery manufacturing hub could be the deciding factor in Hong Kong’s bid to become a regional gold trading center, an opinion piece rather than a policy move.

Finally, the IEA’s governing board meets October 15 to review the diesel and stock-release situation, the first formal checkpoint since the agency backed accelerating the remaining 100 million barrels of the March collective action and prioritizing diesel releases.
