JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs are underwriting only $1.3 billion of Volta Infrastructure's $5 billion loan package, leaving a $3.7 billion chip loan ununderwritten as the AI cloud startup pitches unrated debt at a yield of about 11 percent.
Why it matters: The split underwrite is a rare sign of bank caution in AI infrastructure finance, showing that even lead arrangers want limited balance sheet risk on neocloud borrowing priced well above earlier deals.
Data as of Monday, October 12, 2026. Bloomberg report via Livemint opened and read in full; PitchBook loan launch terms corroborate the package structure, pricing talk and the October 14 commitment deadline. Developing item, 2 to 3 sentences by design.
The underwritten $1.3 billion term loan covers lease payments to Bitdeer for a data centre complex in Norway, where Anthropic has signed a six year compute capacity agreement, while the ununderwritten $3.7 billion loan would fund purchases of about 36,000 Nvidia GPUs. Because the package is unrated, the usual collateralized loan obligation buyers are largely shut out, narrowing the investor base ahead of the October 14 commitment deadline.
The structure reflects lender wariness after the hung debt losses of 2022, even as banks compete to finance the AI buildout. Earlier neocloud transactions, including deals for CoreWeave and Lambda, cleared at lower borrowing costs than Volta’s roughly 11 percent yield.
