Anglo backs South Africa with R11.2 billion Sishen investment

Anglo American is investing R11.2 billion in the ultra-high dense media separation iron ore project at Sishen, as chief executive Duncan Wanblad calls South Africa a premier mining jurisdiction.

Why it matters: The commitment is a bellwether for major-miner confidence in South Africa, conditional on faster progress on red tape, rail and ports, and energy security.

Data as of Wanblad remarks at Joburg Indaba discussion, reported Oct 12, 2026

Anglo American chief executive Duncan Wanblad said South Africa remains one of the world’s premier mining jurisdictions, in a discussion with Joburg Indaba chairperson Bernard Swanepoel reported by Mining Weekly. The company is backing the view with R11.2 billion, about $677 million, for the ultra-high dense media separation iron ore project at Sishen in the Northern Cape, alongside further commitments to exploration, innovation and technology spending in the country.

Wanblad pointed to the depth of South African mining expertise, with South Africans holding senior roles internationally, plus world-class engineering, sophisticated financial markets and established institutions. He welcomed the Government-Business Partnership for Growth and Jobs moving into its third phase with mining as a pillar, a program targeting 3 percent growth and one million jobs by 2030.

The endorsement came with conditions. Wanblad named three priorities: reducing administrative complexity, including a modern cadastral system to improve transparency and unlock exploration; making rail, freight and port systems highly reliable, where he credited reform with strong progress; and energy security, which he said has improved markedly. Anglo’s Envusa partnership with EDF Power Solutions has connected 520 MW of renewable power, with more to come.

The read for the sector is conditional confidence rather than a blank cheque. The Sishen spending is real capital in the ground, but Anglo’s own framing ties further investment to the pace of regulatory and logistics reform. That makes Sishen’s execution, and the cadastre timeline, the markers to watch.
