Czechoslovak Group, known as CSG, said on October 13 that it has acquired shares giving it a 9.5 percent equity position in MDA Space, making it the Canadian company’s largest current shareholder. The stake is held through a dedicated subsidiary, and CSG described itself as a long-term strategic investor rather than announcing a takeover.
MDA Space, listed in Toronto and New York, builds satellite systems and works in space robotics, geointelligence and space operations, employing more than 4,000 people. For CSG, a Prague based defence and industrial group, this is an entry into the space sector after smaller venture investments through its Tech Horizons fund in SatVu in the United Kingdom and Atmos Space Cargo in Germany.
CSG said it wants to explore cooperation over time, including co-investing in manufacturing or assembly facilities in Europe, partnering on strategic acquisitions and introducing its customer relationships to support MDA Space’s international growth. It has also created a dedicated space team, with new strategy, technology and corporate development roles and a senior adviser for Canada.
Neither company disclosed the price paid. The move matters less for its size than for its direction: a fast growing European defence manufacturer is using a listed minority stake to buy a position, and potential industrial partnerships, in North American space infrastructure.
