Mauritius imposes curfew after unrest over police shooting

Politics Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · Updated Oct 13, 2026 21:53

Mauritius announced a curfew from 8:30 in the evening to 6 in the morning in the capital Port Louis and other major centres after protesters blocked roads and burned tyres over the police shooting of a 27 year old woman.

Why it matters: Public unrest is rare on the Indian Ocean tourist island, and a curfew in the capital is an early test for Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam's government ahead of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday to assess the situation.

Data as of Tuesday, October 13, 2026, night. Single report: Al Jazeera, opened and read in full, citing local media on the charge against a police sergeant and Reuters on the police investigation, hence grade C. Developing item, 2 to 3 sentences by design.

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced the curfew in an address to the nation on Tuesday, covering Port Louis and major population centres, after a night of unrest that closed some schools. The protests followed the shooting of Elodie Thomas, 27, who was wounded while travelling home from work in a van in the south of the capital and underwent successful surgery to remove a bullet.

Local media reported that a police sergeant has been charged in connection with the shooting, and police said an investigation is under way, according to Reuters. The prime minister’s office said the situation had returned to normal and the public sector would operate as usual, with the cabinet set to meet on Wednesday.
