Roche will pay Rona Therapeutics $100 million upfront for full rights to an experimental RNA interference obesity drug targeting ALK7, in a deal worth just over $1 billion including milestones, plus royalties.

Why it matters: It is Roche's fifth licensing deal with a China-based drugmaker since late August, and it pushes the Swiss group deeper into obesity, where Lilly and Novo Nordisk still hold a commanding lead.

Roche has licensed an experimental obesity medicine from Shanghai-based Rona Therapeutics, paying $100 million upfront for full ownership of an RNA interference drug aimed at ALK7, a receptor expressed in fat tissue that regulates lipid metabolism, with just over $1 billion more tied to development, regulatory and commercial milestones plus sales royalties. The drug joins five other experimental obesity medicines in Roche’s pipeline as the company works to close the gap with Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. It is Roche’s fifth agreement with a China-based drugmaker since the end of August and its tenth since the start of 2025, the most among large pharmaceutical peers.
