A JE Dunn and Alberici joint venture has begun construction on the initial phases of Saronic Technologies' Port Alpha, a shipyard of more than $3.2 billion at the Port of Brownsville, Texas.

Why it matters: The project is the first greenfield shipyard built in the United States since the Second World War according to the builders, and it anchors the rebuild of American shipbuilding capacity for autonomous and crewed vessels.

Data as of Groundbreaking ceremony September 30, 2026; JV construction announcement October 6, reported October 9-12, 2026. Total investment described as over $3.2 billion, which is project capital investment, not a construction contract value.

Construction has begun on Port Alpha, Saronic Technologies’ planned shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, Texas, with a joint venture of JE Dunn and Alberici building the initial phases. The ceremonial groundbreaking took place on September 30, attended by Vice President J.D. Vance and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and the builders announced the start of work on October 6.

The development represents more than $3.2 billion of capital investment on an initial 835-acre site, with an option to expand to nearly 4,400 acres. The yard will manufacture manned, autonomy-capable and autonomous ships. Early work covers grading, ground improvement, drainage, access roads and utilities, followed by assembly buildings, material-handling systems and supporting facilities, using a progressive design-build approach with Stantec and KPFF.

At full buildout the project is expected to create up to 10,000 direct jobs, with operations expected from 2028. Company and state material describes about 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity in the first configuration, which Saronic says would more than double current US commercial shipbuilding capacity.

The builders describe Port Alpha as the first greenfield shipyard in the United States since the Second World War. Whether or not that framing survives scrutiny, the capital commitment is real, and it places a defence technology company, rather than a legacy shipbuilder, at the centre of the newest attempt to rebuild American maritime manufacturing.
