Google has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with American Electric Power for the output of a 702MW fuel cell plant near Cheyenne, Wyoming, a project AEP estimates will cost about $4 billion to build.

Why it matters: The deal ties one of the largest US data center campuses directly to dedicated fuel cell generation, another sign hyperscalers are securing firm power they control rather than waiting in grid interconnection queues.

AEP plans to start construction in 2026 and reach full operations by the end of 2028. Google is developing a 2.7GW data center campus near Cheyenne on a 716-acre site, with four data halls planned for completion by 2031.
