Turkish police raided the Istanbul offices of pro-opposition broadcaster Halk TV on Wednesday, cut its live broadcast and installed a government trustee to run the channel, with Euronews reporting 11 people arrested and the authorities giving no immediate reason for the operation.
Why it matters: Halk TV is the main private television voice of the opposition, and putting it under a trustee extends a pattern of state control over mainstream media that rights groups and Western governments have criticised for years.
Data as of Wednesday, October 14, 2026, 12:52 ET. Reuters report read in full via Daily Maverick; the arrest count is from Euronews reporting of the same raid. Russian and Greek state and public outlets (TASS, ERT) carried matching accounts of the trustee appointment and the halted broadcast.
Turkish police raided the Istanbul offices of Halk TV, the pro-opposition broadcaster, on Wednesday morning and a government trustee was appointed to run the channel. The station said hundreds of police entered the building and that entry was barred while a search was conducted; its live broadcast was cut at 6:30 a.m. local time and replaced with pre-recorded material, and editor-in-chief Suat Toktas was not permitted to keep the broadcast running, a Halk TV programmer said. Euronews reported 11 people were arrested in the operation.
There was no immediate comment from the authorities and it was not clear why the raid was ordered. Ozgur Ozel, who leads the main opposition party, condemned the move as an attempt to stop people accessing news, likening trustee appointments at broadcasters to the removal of elected mayors in the wider legal crackdown on the opposition. Rights groups and Western countries have repeatedly criticised President Tayyip Erdogan’s government over press freedom, pointing to access bans, fines and restrictions imposed on opposition and independent outlets.
