NTT Data Group is finalizing an agreement with Anthropic to develop a data centre in Osaka Prefecture, western Japan, according to Nikkei reporting carried by Data Center Dynamics. The facility would be Anthropic’s first dedicated data centre in Japan, with capacity of up to 500MW and an investment of up to 1 trillion yen, about $6.3 billion.
The companies are aiming to finalize the agreement by the end of NTT’s fiscal 2026, which runs to March 2027, with partial operations possible as early as 2028. Neither company commented on the report, and no terms, financing structure or phasing beyond the headline capacity have been disclosed.
The context is the speed of Anthropic’s capacity contracting. The company has signed agreements covering at least 14.8GW of compute capacity since October last year, spanning owned-style facilities and cloud deals with Amazon Web Services, CoreWeave, Google Cloud and others, most of it in the United States. A Japanese anchor site would diversify that footprint into Asia’s second largest data centre market.
NTT Data operates more than 150 data centres in over 20 countries, including two existing Osaka facilities, which makes it the natural domestic partner for a build of this size. Until NTT or Anthropic confirm the talks, the project sits in the reported, not agreed, column, and the 500MW and $6.3 billion figures should be read as the top of a reported range.
