The Georgia Ports Authority has secured US Army Corps of Engineers approval for a 2.3 billion dollar container terminal on Hutchinson Island in Savannah, a 350 acre facility adding 3.5 million TEUs of annual capacity and taking the port toward 12 million TEUs in total.
Why it matters: Federal permits are the long pole in US port expansion, and clearing one after a three year review locks in the largest single piece of the biggest port investment programme in the country, with construction from 2028 into the mid 2030s.

The Port of Savannah has its permit. The US Army Corps of Engineers has approved the Savannah Container Terminal after a three year review, Georgia Ports Authority president Kevin Price announced on Wednesday, clearing the way for a 2.3 billion dollar, 350 acre terminal on Hutchinson Island that will add 3.5 million TEUs of annual capacity, handle the largest container ships, and take the port’s total capacity to 12 million TEUs, from 7.75 million today.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2028 and finish in the mid 2030s. The terminal is the centrepiece of Georgia Ports’ nearly 5 billion dollar, decade long investment plan, which also includes five more large containership berths in Savannah, expanded roll on roll off capacity at Brunswick, and a 1.6 billion dollar redevelopment of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal, more than 60 percent complete in late September and due by the end of 2028, lifting its capacity from 200,000 TEUs to 1.75 million. The port handled a record 504,015 TEUs in September, up 3.7 percent on a year earlier.
