State Street shares gap down despite earnings beat

Rates Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · Updated Oct 14, 2026 13:49

State Street reported third quarter earnings of $3.69 a share, just above the $3.68 consensus, on revenue of $4.00 billion, up 12.9 percent from a year earlier but slightly below the roughly $4.03 billion analysts expected, and the shares gapped down at the open.

Why it matters: Custody banks are a clean read on market levels and client activity, so a revenue miss at State Street on a day of hot inflation data underlines how little room bank results have to disappoint this earnings season.

State Street’s third quarter was better than it looked in the share price. The Boston custody bank earned $3.69 a diluted share, up from $2.78 a year earlier and a cent above consensus, as servicing fees rose 9.9 percent to $1.49 billion on higher client activity and market levels. Assets under custody or administration reached $59.2 trillion, and assets under management ended the quarter at $6.31 trillion.

Revenue was the problem. At $4.004 billion it rose 12.9 percent from a year earlier but missed the roughly $4.03 billion consensus and fell 1 percent from the second quarter, while expenses rose 8 percent to $2.62 billion. The shares, which had closed at $174.10 on Tuesday, opened at $161.90 and traded lower still in early dealings, a drop of about 8 percent that left the earnings beat with little credit.
