Uruguay's government on Wednesday announced a data center technology park backed by Spain's Solaria worth about 5.7 billion dollars, with 5.5 billion for data centers in Canelones and San Jose and 200 million for a solar plant to supply them.
Why it matters: At 5.7 billion dollars it is one of the largest single investments in Uruguay's recent history, and it pairs 200 megawatts of first phase data center capacity with dedicated solar in a country whose grid is already almost entirely renewable.
Data as of Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Single-sourced: AFP report of the Uruguayan government's announcement, published via UOL in Portuguese and read in full; Bloomberg separately reported Solaria building a solar plant for a Uruguay data center the same day, but the project detail here is AFP's.
Uruguay’s government on Wednesday announced a data center technology park to be built by Spain’s Solaria, an investment of about 5.7 billion dollars that President Yamandu Orsi described as one of the most important in the country’s recent history. About 5.5 billion dollars is for the data centers themselves, to be built in Canelones, bordering Montevideo, and in San Jose to the west, with a first phase of 200 megawatts, and a further 200 million dollars for a solar plant in Florida department, in the center south, to supply the park.
The project is expected to create more than 3,000 construction jobs and will operate under Uruguay’s free zone regime, which carries tax benefits. Solaria already generates solar power in Uruguay through two photovoltaic plants selling to UTE, the state electricity distributor, and the country runs an electricity matrix that is 98 percent renewable, the draw for pairing new data center load with dedicated solar rather than grid purchases alone.
