Voltus raises $225 million to expand virtual power plant platform

Voltus raised $225 million in an oversubscribed Series D led by Generation Investment Management, with Activate Capital and Vitol as co-leads, to expand its distributed energy platform toward 20GW by 2030.

Why it matters: Grid flexibility is being financed as capacity in its own right: with North American peak demand now forecast to grow 24 percent over a decade, aggregators that can dispatch existing loads are raising infrastructure-scale equity.

Data as of Reported October 13, 2026, single-sourced: Mercom Capital reporting of the company announcement; no separate filing or second outlet confirmed the round size at write time.

Voltus, a distributed energy resource platform and virtual power plant operator, has raised $225 million in an oversubscribed Series D round. Generation Investment Management led, with Activate Capital and Vitol as co-leads, joined by Broadscale Group, Climate Investment, NGP, Ajax Strategies and All Aboard Fund.

The company plans to grow its platform to 20GW by 2030 through its Bring Your Own Capacity programme in the PJM and MISO markets, and to expand operations across the United States and Canada. The model aggregates commercial and industrial loads and distributed assets and sells their flexibility into wholesale markets as dispatchable capacity.

The raise is priced against a tightening grid. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation now expects peak demand to rise 24 percent over the next decade, more than double the growth projected two years ago, with data centres and electrification the drivers. Activate Capital, a returning investor, framed flexibility as the fastest and cheapest capacity the grid can add.

The round stands out against its sector’s funding climate. Mercom’s own tracking put first-half 2026 venture funding for smart grid companies at $711 million across 34 deals, down 35 percent year on year, which makes a $225 million single raise a disproportionate share of the available pool and a bet that flexibility platforms consolidate.
