American Electric Power has agreed to buy up to 1.6 GW of Mainspring Energy linear generators over eight years, in a deal that could be worth up to $4 billion.
Why it matters: The order shows a large US utility buying dispatchable, fast to deploy generation at scale as power demand rises, rather than waiting on conventional plant construction.

American Electric Power has agreed to buy up to 1.6 GW of Mainspring Energy’s linear generators over the next eight years, with an initial 190 MW delivery set for next year and purchases of about 200 MW a year after that. Mainspring said the agreement could be worth up to $4 billion, and that the units, supplied in standard 2.5 MW configurations, can be online within 12 months.
The generators run on natural gas, biogas or hydrogen and produce close to zero nitrogen oxide emissions, according to the company. The order is Mainspring’s largest to date and its first move into the investor owned utility market beyond commercial, industrial and data centre customers.
